Is it a good idea to shrink a hat too big for me?

I have a bucket/fisherman hat and it's like 5 sizes too big for me. Do you think I should try to shrink it? How would I go about doing it? I was think about putting it in the washer, but it might shrink too much. What should I do? Please help!
