In what ways can I help the homeless?

Not informal ways like approaching them by the roadside and donating but through organizations or groups that help them get out of the cycle. Are there any organizations you know of that help uplift them to better conditions? How can I find out about these community programs. Any other methods that come to mind, please feel free to share.
