I want to go to Rome but I need help!?

I am a student and want to go to Rome as cheaply as possible. I know about the hostel thing, and I have some cheap airfare. What I really need to know is how expensive things are there and how much spending money I would need, and would it be affordable/worth it to buy a train p and travel to other cities in Italy?
